The sector represents a significant component of the national economy with 680,113 active enterprises in 2024 (13.5% of the total) and over one million employees, although characterized by small company sizes: 84.1% are still individual enterprises.
\nDigital technologies are revolutionizing the sector. Currently, 41% of Italian agricultural companies use at least one Agriculture 4.0 solution, with 29% adopting two or more. However, only 8% of enterprises have achieved full digital maturity. Broadband represents fundamental infrastructure, with coverage in European rural areas having increased from 15% four years ago to 40% currently. The 2024-2027 CAP offers significant opportunities to further strengthen connectivity in agricultural areas.
\nAn important obstacle to digitalization is the aging agricultural population: the average age of Italian farmers is 63 years, with only 7.5% of enterprises managed by entrepreneurs under 40. However, the 52,717 young entrepreneurs already generate 15% of the value of national primary production, constituting a technologically advanced vanguard.
\nThe emerging professional figure is the Agri Manager, a multifunctional entrepreneur who integrates agro-food skills with abilities in economics, management, and digital technology. He manages a true digital “control room” where the ability to interpret complex information becomes a distinctive element, while maintaining knowledge of biological cycles and cultural relationship with the land.
\nKey technologies include IoT sensors distributed in the soil and irrigation systems, which monitor humidity, temperature, and electrical conductivity in real time. The farmer receives daily notifications from his own farm management app. Drones, valued at approximately \u20ac15,000, also become essential tools, flying at 50 meters height with centimeter-level GPS precision to monitor plant health status and identify water stress, nutritional deficiencies, and diseases.
\nThe current challenge requires integrated skills. A young graduate in agricultural sciences alone would hardly be able to cope with the complexity of contemporary agriculture: the true strength lies in the integration of skills through solid professional networks and multidisciplinary teamwork.
\nThere is growing demand for agricultural engineers, with an estimated need for 55,000-64,000 specialists in the coming five years according to Excelsior Unioncamere. Three professional clusters are developing: the first concerns mechatronics (agricultural robotics, autonomous tractors, automated systems); the second the digital dimension (data analysts, agritech developers, AI specialists); the third sustainability (sustainable agriculture consultants, circular economy experts, green managers).
\nGrowing urbanization (currently 72% of the Italian population lives in urban areas) is depopulating inland areas. In parallel, vertical farms are emerging, transforming empty urban spaces into productive farms. In Italy, there are approximately thirty, such as Future Farming District in Capriolo, Planet Farm in Como, and Kilometro Verde in Verolanova. These spaces generate hybrid green-tech professions that require agronomic skills integrated with advanced digital technologies.
\nThe success of Agriculture 4.0 depends on effective collaboration among the three professional clusters: multidisciplinary teams made up of software developers, agronomists, data scientists, mechatronic engineers, and human-machine interface experts coordinated through integrated digital platforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Italian agriculture is facing a complex transformation that requires the renewal of professions and skills.
